Flora

A successful foster

About

Following an appeal for local fosterers, we contacted British Chihuahua Rescue (BCR) to offer our support. We both have extensive experience with dogs and over the years, many of these have been rescues. We already shared our lives with two small rescue dogs, but after losing our beloved Chihuahua just over a year ago, something was missing. We felt we had the experience, time and right environment to help other Chihuahuas when they needed it most.

From the very beginning, the support and guidance we received from BCR was clear and reassuring. The fostering process was explained in detail, followed by a thorough home and garden assessment. Time was taken to understand our experience and to meet our own dogs. We also received a helpful call to talk through the process in more depth, which gave us further confidence and clarity.

After the assessment, careful thought was given to matching the right dog to the right home. One young female Chihuahua stood out. She was a happy, personable dog who struggled with reactivity when out on a lead. We had already shared our experience of working patiently with a reactive rescue dog in the past, helping him grow into the calm and confident dog he is today.

After much consideration, we were asked whether we might consider adoption rather than fostering. A meet and greet was arranged with our existing dogs, and it quickly became clear this was a perfect match. She joined our family and found her forever home.

Although the fostering journey didn’t unfold quite as we expected, fate works in mysterious ways and she landed firmly on all four paws. She settled in beautifully with our dogs and has since met and gets on splendidly, with another family Chihuahua. We already dote on her and are working patiently to build her confidence and support her on walks.

Having experienced both the fostering assessment process and the adoption journey, we were genuinely impressed by the care, thought and governance in place at BCR. We saw first-hand the lengths taken to ensure every dog is carefully matched, supported and kept safe, especially when precious wee dogs need it most.
