About
Hello, I’m Olive.
I’ve been in my foster home for almost five weeks now, and apparently everyone fell in love with me pretty much instantly. Which feels about right, if I’m honest.
I’m a very sweet, affectionate little girl and I’m not shy about asking for attention. I’ll gently paw you if I’d like some love and when I’m feeling playful you can watch me spin on the spot and show off my nimble moves (I only weigh just over 3kg, after all). I enjoy short bursts of play and may favourites are tug with a soft toy, pouncing games, and the occasional mini game of fetch. I’ve got a real sense of fun and quite a lot of character packed into my tiny frame.
When I’m in the mood, I’m also rather clever. I know how to sit, spin, lie down and wait on command, although I do feel it’s important to point out that cooperation depends very much on whether I feel like it at the time.
I enjoy walks and my ears prick up immediately if I hear the word “walk”. I’m a bit of a late riser though, mornings are strictly for sleeping and I much prefer heading out later in the afternoon. A 20–30 minute walk once a day is plenty for me, especially as I love to take my time sniffing to catch up with all the local news. I’m happy in a harness, comfortable wearing coats for warmth, and I walk nicely on the lead… albeit at my own pace. If I’m not feeling it, I’m perfectly happy to be carried for a bit.
I do need some support around other dogs. I am reactive at dogs I see on walks, even from a distance, so careful route planning helps. With patient handling, I’ve shown that I can settle. I’ve managed a successful parallel walk with another dog and walked calmly nearby as long as the other dog respected my space. Ongoing, gentle training will really benefit me here.
At home, I’m a lovely mix of affectionate and independent. I adore spending the evening in the lounge with my people while the TV is on, but when I’m tired and relaxing I prefer not to be fussed unless I come to you first. I communicate clearly when I’ve had enough and I do best with humans who understand and respect small dog body language.
At night, I would very much like to sleep on or in your bed if possible (good news — I’m not a snorer). During the day, if you’re busy, I’m happy to take myself off for a nap under a blanket in another room. I don’t need constant contact, just the reassurance that you’re around.
I’m fully house trained with excellent bladder control and will happily let you know when I need to go out. If you ask me if I want to “pee pee” and I need to go, I’ll follow you straight to the door. If not, I’ll very deliberately look the other way.
When left alone, I may be a little anxious at first, but I do settle and I’ve never been destructive. I currently have the run of the house when left and we’re still learning whether I prefer that or the comfort of a crate.
You might notice that I have some fur variation. I’ve got very fine, almost bald fur on my face (which can be normal for my colouring), the most adorable fluffy ginger eyebrows and super-soft downy fur along my back. I had a full dental around nine months ago and blood tests at the same time, all of which were clear. Like many chihuahuas, I reverse sneeze (or “honk”), especially if I’ve been excited or gulped water. Gentle throat or nostril rubbing helps and I have natural drops with my food which seem to keep things comfortable.
Food wise, I have a robust tummy, though I can be a bit on-and-off with meals while I’m settling. I love enrichment. Cream cheese in a Kong or on a lick mat is a firm favourite, as are snuffle mats. I can guard very high value long lasting treats, so my foster family manage this sensibly by offering appropriate options and giving me space.
My ideal home
I’m looking for a calm, understanding home with someone who knows (or is keen to learn about) chihuahuas or small breeds and their quirks. I need humans who will give me lots of love and respect my boundaries. I wouldn’t be suitable for a home with young children.
I would really prefer to be an only dog. While I previously tolerated an elderly, placid dog, my current feelings suggest I’d be happiest having my humans all to myself. I also wouldn’t be able to live with cats. I find them far too interesting when I see them out and about.
I’m used to being left for periods, but I’d love a home where I’m not alone all day, every day.
If you’re looking for a small dog with a big personality, a playful streak, and a lot of love to give (and you’re happy to listen when I tell you what I need), I might just be your girl.
Love
Olive
